Eligibility criteria for the RRB ALP examination are framed by the Railway Recruitment Boards to ensure that candidates possess the required technical background, age suitability and medical fitness for the role of Assistant Loco Pilot. Since ALP is a safety-critical post involving train operations, eligibility conditions are applied strictly at every stage of recruitment.

From an educational perspective, candidates must have passed Matriculation (Class 10) along with ITI certification in relevant trades such as Fitter, Electrician, Electronics Mechanic, Instrument Mechanic, Wireman, Diesel Mechanic, Turner or equivalent trades recognized by NCVT/SCVT. Alternatively, candidates holding a Diploma or Degree in Engineering in disciplines like Mechanical, Electrical, Electronics or Automobile Engineering are also eligible.

The age limit for RRB ALP generally ranges from 18 to 30 years. However, age relaxation is provided to candidates belonging to reserved categories such as SC, ST, OBC, Ex-Servicemen, PwBD and other eligible groups as per Government of India norms. Only Indian nationals are eligible to apply for RRB ALP recruitment.

It is important to note that candidates must meet the prescribed medical standards, including vision requirements, as failure to qualify the medical examination leads to disqualification irrespective of performance in written exams.

The application fee for RRB ALP is standardized across all Railway Recruitment Boards. Fee concessions are provided to reserved categories as per government rules.

RRB ALP vacancies are released in large numbers during major recruitment cycles, as the Assistant Loco Pilot role is critical for train operations across Indian Railways. Vacancies are announced zone-wise based on operational requirements, locomotive availability and manpower planning.

The RRB ALP selection process is multi-staged and designed to assess both technical knowledge and aptitude required for safe train operations. Each stage is qualifying, and candidates must clear all stages to be considered for final appointment.

Final merit is prepared by giving weightage to CBT Stage 2 and CBAT scores. CBT Stage 1 is qualifying in nature and used for shortlisting candidates.

The RRB ALP exam pattern is structured to progressively evaluate candidates from general aptitude to specialized technical and cognitive abilities required for loco operations.

CBT Stage 1 consists of questions from Mathematics, General Intelligence & Reasoning, General Science and General Awareness. This stage is conducted online and includes negative marking of one-third marks for each wrong answer.

CBT Stage 2 is divided into two parts. Part A includes Mathematics, Reasoning, General Science and General Awareness, while Part B focuses on trade-specific technical subjects. Part B is qualifying in nature, and candidates must secure minimum qualifying marks.

The RRB ALP syllabus is extensive and covers both general aptitude and technical trade knowledge. Mathematics includes topics such as Number System, Ratio and Proportion, Percentage, Time and Work, Speed and Distance and Mensuration.

General Science focuses on Physics and Chemistry topics relevant to engineering applications, including motion, work and energy, electricity, heat, basic mechanics and materials. General Awareness includes current affairs, Indian Railways knowledge, history, geography, polity and economy.

The trade syllabus in CBT Stage 2 Part B varies based on ITI or engineering discipline. Topics include tools, safety practices, basic electrical circuits, diesel engines, mechanical systems and electronics fundamentals, depending on the trade.

RRB ALP posts are placed under Pay Level 2 of the 7th Pay Commission. The basic pay is ₹19,900, along with admissible allowances such as Dearness Allowance, House Rent Allowance and Transport Allowance.

Apart from salary, ALPs receive benefits like medical facilities, travel concessions, pension benefits and job security associated with central government employment.

Career progression is well-defined, with promotion opportunities to Loco Pilot (Goods), Loco Pilot (Passenger) and Loco Pilot (Mail/Express) based on experience and departmental examinations.

The RRB ALP application process is conducted online through official RRB websites. Candidates must register using basic details, fill the application form, upload photographs and signatures and select preferred railway zones.

Only one application per candidate is permitted. Submission of multiple applications can result in rejection of all applications.
